K-8 After School Enrichment Programs

To extend and enhance student learning opportunities, teachers and outside providers, alike, offer a variety of programs in the after school hours.   The programs are offered in six to eight week cycles so that students can take advantage of the variety of options presented.  These programs are offered at an additional cost and are quite popular.  Typically, these after school opportunities are scheduled on different days of the week.  Be sure to sign up early!

School Band
We are excited to see that throughout the ’11-’12 school year, we are in the beginning stages of having a school band back on our campus.  At the direction of Mr. Lew Johnson, students in grades 4 – 8 may avail themselves of lessons with Mr. Johnson and begin their path to being a part of a bigger band by learning with their peers at The Phoenix Schools.  Percussion, trumpet, flute are some of the instruments you can choose to learn and play.  Contact the office for more information.

Choir
At the direction of our choir director, students develop vocal scales, pitch and melodies.  Students voices meld together as they create the beautiful sound that comes from a choral group.  The Phoenix Schools Choir has been honored by singing at the annual Folsom Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony for the past two years.  The choir also performs at select assemblies and other community events throughout the year.  For more information contact scastro@phoenixschools.com.

FIT Kids Sports Program

FIT Kids Sports Program promotes teamwork while improving coordination and gross motor skills.  Team sport instruction focuses on soccer, flag football, basketball, and baseball.  Through the study of the physical and mental aspects of each sport, students will learn the importance of fitness and positive sportsmanship.  For more information contact asmith@phoenixschools.com

Phoenix Cheer Squad
As a member of the Phoenix Cheer Squad, students learn leadership skills and build friendships while practicing basic cheer moves choreographed to chants.  Cheerleaders have the opportunity to highlight their hard work at select school assemblies and school events.  For more information contact mwoods@phoenixschools.com

Theater Arts
Theater arts provides discovery and interaction in a non-competitive, supportive, and joyfully challenging atmosphere.  Our goal is to foster a positive self-concept in students, encouraging them to explore life by trying on various roles and gaining dramatic skills.  Much of this is done through theater games and imaginative exploration such as role-playing, acting out, and pantomimes. Students learn to roar like a lion and walk like an old troll. They try on accents and costumes, as well as learn lines, and perform on stage.  Each student has a role in which they memorize lines, actions, and attitudes. They are encouraged to discover the character with in and bring it out.  Most of all they are having fun.  For more information, contact kwiegand@phoenixschools.com

Art AfterSchool
This particular after school opportunity is a special venue in which students discover the connection between life and those things they can personally create and develop.   Art AfterSchool is all about providing a fun, stimulating environment in which students can feel successful and challenged.  It is the desire to provide a venue in which students can stretch beyond what is available and possible in the weekly classroom experience. Students explore new and diverse expressions of art.  Students work in clay, and plaster, they work with wire, pencil, acrylics, watercolor and much more. They discover new loves and passions.  For more information, contact kwiegand@phoenixschools.com

Chess Clubs
US ChessMates invites students to learn the fundamentals of chess as they build their skills in preparation for competition at regional and statewide competitions.  Through instruction in the game of chess, students develop analytical and problem solving skills.  Whether a beginner or an experienced chess player, select either group to find a good fit for your child.  For more information, contact  www.uschessmates.com.
