The unique qualities of a 2nd grade child creates a desire in many teachers to work with this age!  Second grade children, for the most part, have transitioned from learning to read to reading to learn.  Second grade children are learning about researching topics of interest.  Their questions become more sophisticated.  They continue to look at their world with such innocent eyes!  And, The Phoenix Schools teachers recognize each child’s unique abilities and stretch their learning to match their strengths.  At the same time, if a child needs support for his or her learning in reading, writing, math, our small class size allows for teachers to address these specific needs.

Our 2nd grade children will continue learning with a core curriculum while at the same time, they will branch out and explore books that are written at their independent reading level.  Students continue to explore genres of writing, building on the work of first grade!

In technology instruction, students are provided time to develop keyboarding skills, while also learning basic file management, computer etiquette, the vocabulary of technology, basic word processing skills. From the foundational skills of K – 2nd grade, students move into 3rd grade ready to take on additional challenges in the applications of their learning.

Second grade continues to help children hone their organizational skills; teachers hold high expectations for students’ learning; teachers create an environment of rich learning.  Students continue to be exposed to, directly taught, and they practice their Life Skills.  You will see students interacting with respect and in a responsible manner to all.
